I will tell you the most effective way to plant peppers in open ground. We always plant two peppers per hole in open ground, and this is a unique method that we use only for peppers (we don’t do this for tomatoes, eggplants and cucumbers). Peppers prefer a denser planting.

In our garden we use a drip irrigation system. It is very convenient and saves a lot of time. We leave 40 cm between two drip tapes and the width between rows is 1 meter, which is optimal and practical for processing peppers.

The distance between the drops in the tape is 20 cm. Before planting the seedlings, we turn on the irrigation and moisten the soil for a couple of hours. We plant the seedlings opposite each drop in a checkerboard pattern with a deviation of 40 cm from each side of the tape. In this way, we create an intensive thickening, making four rows of pepper on two drip tapes.

Reasons for such a tight fit:

  1. Two plants in one hole serve as a support for each other. Pepper is a rather fragile plant and in the open field it is exposed to strong winds and other natural factors that can damage the bush. If the pepper grows alone, there is a higher risk of damage. Once the plants have grown, their density supports the entire group.
  2. Dense planting creates a large mass of foliage that provides shade for the plants. This is especially important for our region (Voronezh region) and more southern regions, where summer heat can damage pepper crops. Thickening solves this problem.
  3. We grow peppers for commercial purposes and strive to get the maximum yield from every square meter of our garden.

I wish everyone all the best and abundant harvests!
