Roses in the garden  , who wouldn’t want to have as many as possible to be able to admire an orderly explosion of colors. There are open spaces adjacent to the houses which represent real pride in the way they are maintained. Flowers are one of the ways to give a high note to the object of elegance. And knowing how to grow beautiful, healthy roses in the garden is one of them.

There are different types (there are currently more than 150 known species and around thirty grow regularly in Italy, editor’s note) and with the most disparate colors. Some are also obtained in the laboratory through specific genetic modifications, such as blue or black roses. However, regarding the latter, it seems that there exists in nature a spontaneous species which is unfortunately in danger of extinction.

These flowers are magnificent and symbolize many emotions and moods, especially in relation to the color of their petals. In addition to creating rose bushes, we could think of covering the lawn or part of it – obviously if we have a garden – with rose bushes which can be planted both in spring and in autumn. There is some useful information to know in this regard. For example, the depth at which to place the plants should be 5 centimeters, with a minimum space of 60 centimeters between them.

As for the seeds, however, it  is advisable to plant them between December and January  , therefore in the first part of the winter and 5 centimeters apart from each other. You can also do it in a pot. The soil should always be well watered and should never dry out. Additionally, many nutrients need to be prepared in a space that can take advantage of light and air. However, you must take precautions and avoid planting rose bushes in the garden in areas exposed to direct sunlight. This could create major problems for plants during the summer.

As for fertilizer, it must be added every three or four weeks during the growing season and when the rose buds appear. Pay attention to the amount of water you give your roses  : in summer, you will need to water them every day, either early in the morning or in the evening, thus avoiding doing it during the hottest hours, which could cause them to burn. But we must not give too much water  , otherwise we will rot the roots and make the plant sick, in addition to attracting parasites harmful.

We then avoid wetting the leaves and petals; the roses must be watered from below, near the stem or from the saucer, if we keep them on a balcony or terrace. In winter, however, we can give them water less frequently, but always respecting the level of the soil, which must always and constantly remain moist. And the size? The ideal period is the months of February and March where it is very cold, and from November to December in regions where temperatures are milder. Faded flowers should be cut off, as they take away valuable energy from the plant.

How to protect roses in winter

Even in winter, proper care must be taken, the soil where we have planted the rose bushes must  be mulched with bark and dry leaves. This thing will protect the roots of flowers from the cold. It will then be necessary to eliminate the withered parts or possibly infested with parasites and shorten the branches that are too long, easy targets of bad weather.

A strong wind or heavy rain could indeed break them. The temperature must be at least 10° and  thermal protection will in this case be provided by the aforementioned mulch. The secret for roses to survive in the garden even in winter is to create a layer of about 4 cm, with leaves and bark that must be free of mold. Finally, for mulching it is necessary to know certain things  , in order to be able to implement it in the best possible way.
