Saving the Orchids: A Guide to Reviving Orchid Roots

Orchids are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful plants that can decorate our interiors. This tropical plant is known for its large green leaves and magnificent blooms. We often grow the Phalaenopsis orchid at home, which requires no special care.

However, this plant has one weak point: its roots. If you overwater this plant, its roots will begin to rot. Fortunately, there’s a very useful method to save your plant: cotton therapy! Let’s see how it works together.

Step 1: Root cutting

The first step is to remove your orchid from its pot and check the condition of the roots. Cut off any soft, rotten, or brittle roots. Use sterilized scissors to do this.

Step 2: Cleaning the roots

After the dead roots have been trimmed, carefully clean the remaining roots. You can purchase a plant anti-mold product, which is simply applied to the surviving roots. Alternatively, you can also use ground cinnamon, which is known to be a very effective natural anti-mold agent.

Step 3: Wrap the plant with cotton

For cotton therapy, take cotton balls, moisten them thoroughly, and press them firmly. Wrap them around the root of the plant. Ensure the cotton stays in place by wrapping it in newspaper. Then wrap the entire plant in a clear plastic bag.

The moist cotton helps reduce root rot that has been partially treated with anti-mold. It also promotes new root growth. If this method is successful, new roots will sprout within a few weeks. Once these roots are strong and stable, you can repot your orchid again. If this treatment fails, you can consult your nurseryman.
