Use your kitchen scraps: A guide to growing vegetables and fruit

In our daily routines, we face the challenge of food waste. Reducing waste is an important step in this initiative. However, many people wonder how they can waste less. One of the best ways to combat waste is to not throw away leftover fruit and vegetables, but instead use them to grow food in your own garden. This isn’t that difficult!

Some clever tips for using up leftover fruit and vegetables:

– Pineapple tips:  Remove the leaves near the fruit and place the tip in water. After a few days, roots will sprout, and once they are long enough, you can plant the tip to create a new pineapple.

– Celery:  Remove the root and place it in about 7 cm of water. After a few days, new leaves will appear above and small roots below the root. You can now plant it in a small pot.

– Ginger:  Choose a ginger with many buds and plant it in the soil with the buds facing upwards.

– Garlic:  Take large garlic cloves, remove the covering around the sprout, and then plant them in the soil with the sprout facing up. Keep each garlic clove about six inches apart.

– Spring onions:  Cut off the roots of the onion, place them in a glass of water, and place it in a sunny spot. Within a few days, small leaves will sprout. You can plant your onions in small pots or in your garden.

– Round onions:  Simply plant the onion in the soil and wait for it to grow.

Using kitchen scraps to grow vegetables and fruit is not only a sustainable solution to reduce food waste, but also offers the opportunity to harvest fresh produce directly from your own garden.
